2007 Feb 24, Charlottesville, VA, indoors,
Boar's Head Sports Club (BHSC)

The short movies below (about 10 seconds each) were taken on the evening of 24 Feb 2007 when the UVA men's tennis team (the Wahoos) met the Boise State men's tennis team (the Broncos), for an indoor match at the Boar's Head Sports Club courts in Charlottesville, VA.

There are short movies of the number 1 doubles match. (I was seated in the bleachers beside that match and did not get to the balcony overlooking the number 2 match or the other side of the courts to film the number 3 match closeup. But you can see some of those doubles matches in the background of the movies of the number 1 match.)

There are short movies of all the singles matches except Barrick and Meros in the number 4 and 6 matches. There was such a battle going on in the number 1 and 2 matches (against the Shields brothers) that I did not get down to those two matches at the other end of the indoor courts. (You can see some of those matches in the background of the Miklos number 5 match.)

Movie file-type info :

Each of the movies below is presented in one format --- Apple Quicktime movie format (.mov file). This is the format directly from the camera, no conversions.

If you have a Quicktime move viewer on your computer, you should be able to view the .mov files. This will probably be no problem on Mac computers ... and no problem with a Mozilla or Firefox browser on most Linux or Microsoft-Windows computers.

Nowadays (circa 2006-2007), even the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser is typically equipped with a Quicktime movie viewer plug-in ("add-on"). BUT ... it seems to be slow to startup, on each and every movie. I have not found a way to speed up its startup in viewing .mov files. You might want to try Firefox.

(If necessary, you may be able to use Edit>Preferences>HelperApplications or Tools>etc.>etc. in your browser to associate the proper player application with the .mov file type. However, the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser does not seem to be very flexible/adaptable with respect to associating viewers with file-types. You may have to do the association outside of the IE browser.)

Movie frame-size and startup info :

Most of these movies were recorded at 640x480 resolution/pixels, rather than 320x240. If you are viewing them with your desktop set at 800x600 resolution, you may find the Quicktime viewer play-and-stop controls are out of sight at the bottom of your screen. You will probably be able to bring them into view by collapsing some of the toolbars at the top of your browser.

You might be lucky enough to have a Quicktime viewer that will allow you to change the size of the movie --- say to 320x240.

If you cannot get the movie controls in sight, you may be able to start the movie by double-clicking on the image of the first frame.

When you click on these movie links, the movie will be started up in a separate window. After viewing the movie, you can close the window to get back to this window.

A single click on each link will probably suffice to start the viewer.

When you hold the mouse cursor over the links, you can probably see the file names in the status area of your browser. The filenames give some indication of the number of hits in the point. Most points are about 1 to 5 hits. An "X" in the filename indicates that it appears that UVA did not win the point.

Camera and picture-taking info :

These movies were taken with a 6 megapixel Nikon Coolpix L1, which has a 5-to-1 optical zoom capability --- and a CIPA rating of about 100 to 150 photos on a pair of AA alkaline batteries. I had to switch batteries in and out, as they temporarily became depleted.

I was able to take about 145 movies of the UVA-versus-BoiseState match ... about 10 seconds each movie (about 20 minutes total --- 640x480 pixels, 30 frames/sec), on the equivalent of a pair or two of AA alkaline batteries.

About a third of those movies went only one hit (serves into the net, serves out, and the like). Essentially all of those "one-hit" movies were discarded, leaving about 95 short movies.

(I doubt if I will use 640x480 resolution again. It seems like the camera simply scaled up 320x240. The quality does not seem to be better at 640x480. In fact, it seems worse ... when viewed on a PC with display resolution set at 800x600.)
