The short movies below (about 10 seconds each) were taken on the evening of 24 Jan 2007 when the UVA men's tennis team (the Wahoos) met the William and Mary men's tennis team (the Tribe), for an indoor match at the McCormack-Nagelson Tennis Center in Williamsburg, VA.

The results of the tournament were as follows.

There are only two short movies of doubles --- both of number 2 doubles, Inglot and Barrick.

There are short movies of all the singles matches except Huey's match, number 3 singles. It was over before I got over to that court with my camera.

Movie file-type info :

Each of the movies below is presented in two formats --- an Apple Quicktime movie format (.mov file) and a Microsoft audio-visual format (.avi file).

The .mov files came directly from the digital camera, no conversion.

If you have a Quicktime movie viewer on your computer, you should be able to view the .mov files. This will probably be no problem on Mac computers ... and no problem with a Mozilla or Firefox browser on most Linux or Microsoft-Windows computers.

Nowadays (circa 2006-2007), even the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser is typically equipped with a Quicktime movie viewer plug-in ("add-on").

(If necessary, you may be able to use Edit > Preferences > HelperApplications or Tools>etc.>etc. in your browser to associate an appropriate player application with the .mov file type. However, the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser does not seem to be very flexible/adaptable with respect to associating viewers with file-types. You may have to do the association outside of the IE browser.)

The avi files :
If you have a version of the Microsoft Windows Media Player on your computer, you MAY be able to view the .avi files. (I had no trouble viewing the .avi files using Windows Media Player 7.0 or 6.4 or even 1998 -- on an old HP Pavilion XL753 PC with an Intel 82810E Graphics Controller, 4.12.01.2576. But on a newer PC, with an NVIDIA GeForce 6100 display adapter, Windows Media Player 10 would only play the sound.)

(The .avi files were converted from the .mov files using the RAD Video Tools utility and using the Indeo 5.04 encoder with no compression. Generally, the .avi file turned out to be about 90% to 110% of the size of the corresponding .mov file.)

Movie frame-size and startup info :

These movies were recorded at 320x240 resolution/pixels. If you are viewing them with your desktop set at a high-resolution, such as 1024x768 or 1200x800, they may look disappointingly small. They are not so small with a desktop set at 800x600 resolution.

You might be lucky enough to have a Quicktime viewer that will allow you to change the size of the movie --- say to double-size (640x480). Or your viewer may allow you to resize the image by dragging some "handles" to make larger size frames.

When you click on these movie links, the movie will be started up in a separate window. After viewing the movie, you can close the window to get back to this window.

A single click on each link will probably suffice to start your viewer.

When you hold the mouse cursor over the links, you can probably see the file names in the status area of your browser. The filenames give some indication of the number of hits in the point. Most points are about 1 to 6 hits. An "X" in the filename indicates that UVA did not appear to win the point.

Camera and picture-taking info :
These movies were taken with a 6 megapixel Nikon Coolpix L1, which has a 5-to-1 optical zoom capability --- and a CIPA rating of about 100 to 150 photos on a pair of AA alkaline batteries. I had to switch batteries in and out, as they temporarily became depleted.

I was able to take about 90 movies, of about 10 seconds each (about 15 minutes total --- 320x240 pixels, 30 frames/sec), on the equivalent of a pair or two of AA alkaline batteries.

About half of those movies went only one hit (serves into the net, serves out, and the like). Essentially all of those "one-hit" movies were discarded, leaving about 40 short movies.
