This Escher and Magritee Art Images page

INTRODUCTION:

Two artists who have created many works that are among my favorites are M. C. Escher (1898-1972) and René Magritte (1898-1967). Images of many of my favorites of their works are below.

Some of the Escher drawings have inspired Lego constructionists and 3D computer modellers to reproduce the Escher images in those formats.

I have included (below) some images of those Lego models --- and some 2D shaded-image renderings of those 3D CG models. (CG = Computer Graphics)

Hopefully this will enahnce enjoyment and considerations of Escher's drawings.

By including these 3D models, I simply mean to show how some people have been challenged by Escher's work. They try to render his 2D optical illusions in 3D.

(NOTE: There is a web site that hosts altered versions of Escher's images --- usually humorous ones --- similar to the many take-offs on daVinci's Mona Lisa. I hope I did not accidentally put one of those images here without noting that it is a "knock-off".)

Magritte, like Escher, seems to have an affinity for creating visual surprises, but his surprises are not quite as geometrically oriented as those of Escher. Magritte strikes out in a slightly different direction. Vive la differance!

How the Images are Presented below :

Each image is shown scaled to a width proportional to the width of your browser window.

Each image is a link to a new window (or tab) that shows the image at its natural size. Click on any image to see it in a separate window.

Close (or minimize) the separate window(s) to access this window again.

If you hold the mouse cursor over an image, a small pop-up 'balloon' will provide a brief description of the image, with the pixel-size indicated. (These pop-ups should work in most web browsers.)

Most of the images are medium- to high-resolution --- more than 500 pixels wide.

Most of the images come from JPEG files --- but there are a few GIF and PNG files.

Not sure these two are by Escher.
The one below may be a CG
