INTRO NETBOOK-SPECS DESKTOP-SPECS
INTRODUCTION : As described on a Linux distro installs page, since 2009, I have installed several 'flavors' of Linux 'distros' on various 'netbook' and 'desktop' computers. The Linux 'flavors' include
In the following 'NETBOOKS' and 'DESKTOPS' sections, I provide the 'specifications' (makers, model numbers, CPU's, etc.) of the computers on which I have installed these Linux 'distros'. I found the Gnome2-Nautilus file manager of Ubuntu 9.10 (2009 October) to be of particular appeal to me because of its 'Nautilus Scripts' capability. Around 2011, the Gnome3 developers decided to drastically change the Gnome2 desktop environment (and showed no appreciation for the features that evolved over time in the Nautilus file manager). Many Gnome2 users were concerned about the direction the Gnome3 developers were taking. (The Gnome3 developers of 2011 seemed like a bunch of immature high-school students who did not appreciate what had come before --- nor cared about the history of what motivated the evolutionary changes in the software. They still seemed like immature high-schoolers in 2018.) When some Argentine Gnome2-Nautilus aficionados forked Gnome2-Nautlus to MATE-Caja, I started keeping track of news about the development of the MATE desktop environment --- from about 2012 to 2018. Around 2014, some Ubuntu developers developed an Ubuntu-MATE 'flavor' of Ubuntu. By 2018, that Linux 'flavor' had matured to the point that I favored it over other MATE-Caja 'distros'--- such as 'Linux Mint MATE'. So, starting around 2018, I started installing Ubuntu-MATE on my desktop and netbook computers --- as indicated in the 'NETBOOKS' and 'DESKTOPS' sections below. A nice set of benchmark results for many CPU's working in a 'single-thread' mode can be seen at cpubenchmark.net. You can compare the performance of AMD CPU's to various lower-end Intel processors, such as various models of 'Atom', 'Pentium', and 'i3' processors (surprisingly many!). Since I do not do processor-hungry gaming on my computers, I generally buy computers with 'lower-end' processors --- computers costing less than $300. The 'low-end' processors are sufficient to my computer usage:
