CONCLUSION     BOTTOM-of-PAGE

INTRODUCTION :

In the 2020-to-2021 time frame, I was migrating data files from an old Dell Windows 7 desktop computer to a newer HP Windows 10 desktop computer.

Besides the appeal of upgrading to a computer with more up-to-date hardware components, I was mainly motivated (and forced) to migrate to Windows 10 (Wikipedia link) because Microsoft was stopping support of Windows 7 (Wikipedia link) in January 2020.

Another strong motivator: Various important software apps, such as web browsers and TurboTax software, needed to be updated and they were no longer going to be available for Windows 7.

So, around the year 2020, I finally started migrating from that old Windows 7 computer to a Windows 10 computer.

It was a rather slow migration consisting of several steps:

  1. Initial setup of the HP Windows 10 computer (in 2020 March)

--- by following initial Microsoft prompts and then eliminating the horrible 'Metro' interface, removing 'bloatware', and going through various Microsoft system settings.

I also installed various apps, in particular:

  2. Installed TurboTax 2020 and migrated 2019 (and previous) TurboTax data files to the HP 'Slimline' computer (in 2020 March)

--- and then used TurboTax (Wikipedia link) to do 2020 federal & state taxes.

A description of the installation of TurboTax 2020 (and 2019 and 2018 and 2017) is on other pages of this site.

  3. Migrated other data files

    • Seamonkey bookmarks
    • Thunderbird email folders
    • various personal files such as photos

    in 2021 June.

In 2021 June, I went through the Microsoft Windows 10 Settings again and made some changes.

The 2020-March and 2021-June links above this introduction are meant to describe the settings as I recorded them in my notes. (The links above are to sections below, on this page.)

Since Microsoft updates to Windows 10 (updates over which we have essentially no control) may change some of these settings, these notes can serve to help me determine whether Microsoft is changing some of my settings --- and help me reset them appropriately.

In the first step above (initial setup of the HP computer), to check on various Microsoft 'default settings', I was right-clicking on various 'Start' menu options --- such as 'Programs & Features', 'System', and 'Device Manager' --- as seen in the following image.

I found that right-clicking on these options was leading to sections (subgroups) of the Windows 10 'Settings' menu --- which shows the following groups:

  1. System (Display, Sound, Notifications, etc.)
  2. Devices
  3. Phone
  4. Network & Internet
  5. Personalization
  6. Apps
  7. Accounts
  8. Time & Language
  9. Gaming
  10. Ease of Access
  11. Cortana
  12. Privacy
  13. Update & Security

I decided to go through these and change settings to accomplish goals such as reducing unnecessary internet/network traffic --- such as sending information back to Microsoft servers --- and to 'the cloud' (whatever Microsoft means by that).

Also, by turning many default settings from 'ON' to 'OFF', a lot of unnecessary 'local' CPU-processing and data-storage input-and-output can be eliminated.

Following are most of the 'Settings' changes that I made --- in 2020 March or 2021 June.

I also installed TurboTax one year (spring 2017) on a laptop with the Windows 10 operating system.

I assembled a Windows 10 Bloatware Cleanup page that provides some information on bloatware removal.

That page also describes some of the 'Settings' that I changed.

HOWEVER, that page does NOT describe the many Windows 10 'default settings' that should be changed.

THIS PAGE is meant to show essentially all of the Windows 10 'Settings' (that are made available to the user) and how I set them.

A main reason for these notes is to serve as a reference if I need to go through 'Settings' on another Microsoft Windows computer

--- OR when I want to check to see if Microsoft system updates have changed any of my settings (and determine whether I want to change them back to the way I had them).

In the 'other-data-migration' process, I will need to transfer

    • mail (Thunderbird mail files)

    • bookmarks (from Seamonkey and Firefox web browsers)

    • personal directories, such as 'Desktop' and 'Documents' --- including the old TurboTax files.

I intend to provide a page on this site that describes that 'Windows7-to-Windows10' migration process --- with details on moving those various types of files and 'importing' them into the newer versions of the applications that use those files.

Enough of this introduction. A description of changes to Windows 10 settings follows.

SYSTEM settings:

In 'System > Notifications & Actions':
Turned OFF essentially all notifications. (May need to revisit this.)

    In 'System > About':
Changed PC name from 'DESKTOP-UBJ26E1' to 'HPdesktop2020'.

    In 'System > Focus Assist':
Changed from 'Off' to 'Priority Only' (Does not want to 'stick'?) and customized the priority list to not show stuff from phones and people (contacts).
    Removed Xbox from notification-apps list.

In 'System > Power & Sleep':
Increased 'Screen' and 'PC' sleep settings to 30 minutes.

    In 'System > Storage':
    it showed 2 drives:
C: 29.3 GB used, 420 GB free (450 GB total)
D: 13.7 GB used, 1.85 GB free (15.6 GB total)

    In 'System > Tablet mode':
    Changed 'When I sign in'
    FROM
'Use the appropriate mode for my hardware'
    TO
    'Use desktop mode'.

Changed 'Hide app icons on the taskbar in tablet mode'
    from ON to OFF.

    In 'System > Multitasking':
    Turned 'Snap' options OFF.

(It annoys me to-the-max when I move a window and it 'snaps' to the top of the screen. Hey, Microsoft. I know where I want to put a window on the screen. I don't want you moving it someplace else.)

    In 'System > Shared experiences':
Changed 'Share across devices' from ON to OFF.
(THIS SEEMS LIKE A SECURITY RISK --- and may incur frequent, unnecessary processing loads.)

DEVICES settings:

In 'Devices > Bluetooth & other devices':
Changed 'Bluetooth' from ON to OFF.
(This can eliminate processing related to searching for local Bluetooth devices.)

    In 'Devices > Mouse':
Changed 'Scroll inactive windows when I hover over them' from ON to OFF.
(This can eliminate some unnecessary --- and confusing --- processing.)

    In 'Devices > Typing':
Changed 'Autocorrect misspelled words' from ON to OFF.
    (Left 'Highlight misspelled words' ON.)
Changed 'Show text suggestions as I type on the software keyboard' from ON to OFF.
Changed 'Add a period after I double-tap the space bar' from ON to OFF.
(These settings can eliminate quite a bit of processing.)

    In 'Devices > Autoplay':
Changed 'Use Autoplay for all media and devices' from ON to OFF.
(LEAVING THIS 'ON' SEEMS LIKE A BIG SECURITY RISK.)

    Set Autoplay defaults for
'Removable drive' to 'Open folder to view files (FileExplorer)'
    and for
'Memory card' to 'Open folder to view files (FileExplorer)'.

PHONE settings:

Had no 2020-March notes on 'Phone' settings.

NETWORK-and-INTERNET settings:

    In 'Network & Internet > Wi-Fi':
Changed 'Wi-Fi' from ON to OFF.
(Plan to use wired ethernet only. This can elininate some processing related to finding wireless access points.)

Changed Hotspot 2.0 'Let me use Online-Sign-Up to get connected' from ON to OFF.

In 'Network & Internet > VPN':
Changed 'Allow VPN over metered networks'
    from ON to OFF.
    Changed 'Allow VPN while roaming'
    from ON to OFF.

In 'Network & Internet > Mobile Hotspot':
CHECK OCCASIONALLY TO MAKE SURE OTHER DEVICES CANNOT USE THIS PC AS A HOTSPOT.

In 'Network & Internet > Airplane mode':
Check occasionally for this desktop PC.
Should be OFF since this desktop PC should not be on an airplane.

In 'Network & Internet > Proxy':
In the 'Automatic Proxy setup' section,
    changed 'Automatically detect settings'
    from ON to OFF.

PERSONALIZATION settings:

    In 'Personalization > Background':
Changed from colored-umbrellas to beach-runner scene.

    In 'Personalization > Taskbar':
    Changed 'Combine taskbar buttons'
    FROM
    'Always, hide labels'
    TO
    'When taskbar is full'.
(I like to see the task indicators, quickly.)

    In 'Personalization > Start':
Changed 'Show recently added apps' to OFF.
(I know what I recently added. I do not need to add this crud to the Start menu.)

APPS settings:

In 'Apps > Apps & Features':
I left installing apps at 'Allow apps from anywhere' ---
to be able to install TurboTax, Seamonkey, Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice.

    In 'Apps > Offline maps':
    Turned OFF 'Automatically update maps'.
(We will probably not be using Microsoft Maps. We can access other maps through web browsers.)

In 'Apps > Apps for websites':
Turned OFF all switches --- for Maps, Microsoft Edge, and 6 switches for Microsoft Office apps.
(I can open the web sites with a web browser.)

    In 'Apps > Startup':
The following 4 apps were shown:
    - BT server
    - HP Message Service
    - Realtek WOWL Utility
    - Windows Defender Notification icon

May revisit these - esp. HP Message Service.
    (See the 2021-June notes below.)

    In 'Apps > Default Apps':
Left these opts unchanged --- because the main app that I would be using at this time was TurboTax.
    (See the 2021-June notes below.)

    In 'Apps > Video playback':
    Left these opts unchanged.
(Should have specified these settings in my notes. Maybe later.)

ACCOUNTS settings:

In 'Accounts > Family & other people':
Clicked 'Add someone else to this PC'.
In a popup window, entered a username such as 'marlo' and password (twice).

There were 3 REQUIRED security questions (of 6) that seemed to all be aimed at well-to-do people who live in suburbs.

I cannot change the security questions to ones more meaningful to me or people in my family. REALLY REALLY IGNORANT & INSENSITIVE & CLUELESS.

I liked the way it was in Windows7 where we could specify a cryptic (but meaningful for me) hint for the password.

TIME-and-LANGUAGE settings:

The time was wrong (at the lower-right end of the taskbar).
Changed zone from Pacific to EastCoast by a click on the time-date at the right end of the taskbar.
Had to use the 'Additional date, time, and region' settings opion.

GAMING settings:

    In 'Gaming > Game bar':
Changed 'Record game clips etc using Game bar' from ON to OFF.

    In 'Gaming > DVR':
Changed 'Maximum recording length' FROM 2 hours TO 30 minutes.
Changed 'Record audio when I record a game' from ON to OFF.
    Unchecked 'Capture mouse cursor'.

    In 'Gaming > Broadcasting':
    In 'Broadcast audio' section,
changed 'Record audio when I broadcast'
    from ON to OFF.
    In 'Broadcast video' section,
unchecked 'Capture mouse cursor in broadcasts'.

    In 'Gaming > Xbox Networking':
CHECK OCCASIONALLY TO MAKE SURE THERE IS NO UNWANTED CONNECTION O PERMISSION TO CONNECT TO A SERVER.

EASE-of-ACCESS settings:

In 'Ease of Access > Display':
    Changed 'Show transparency in windows'
    from ON to OFF.
(This is more confusing/distracting than helpful to me. Seems like Microsoft was just 'showing off' by making this feature the default.)

(Left 'Show animations in windows' ON.)

Changed 'Automatically hide scroll bars in windows'
    from ON to OFF.
(I use scroll bars so much that this feature is just slowing down my 'workflow'.)

    Changed 'Show notifications for'
FROM '5 secs' TO '15 secs'.
(I'm a slow reader --- and I don't always look at notifications right away.)

In 'Ease of Access > Cursor size':
Changed cursor thickness to be thicker, BUT
later changed it back to very thin when I found that the thick-cursor hid letters in very small fonts in entry fields.

CORTANA settings:

In 'Cortana > Talk to Cortana':
    In 'Lock Screen' section,
changed 'Use Cortana when my device is locked'
    from ON to OFF.
(I do not want to use Cortana at all. It is just a nuisance to me, and a likely security risk.)

    In 'Cortana > Permissions':
Changed 'Safe search' from 'Moderate' to OFF.
Changed 'Windows Cloud Search' from ON to OFF.
Changed 'My device history' from ON to OFF.

In 'Cortana > Cortana across my devices':
Changed 'Help me pick up where I left off on other devices'
    from ON to OFF.

PRIVACY settings:
(IMPORTANT!!!)

    In 'Privacy > General':
Changed 'Let websites provide locally relevant content by accessing my language list'
from ON to OFF. (VERY INTRUSIVE)

Changed 'Let Windows track app launches to improve Start and Search results'
from ON to OFF. (EXTREMELY INTRUSIVE and UNWANTED PROCESSING.)

Changed 'Show me suggested content in the Settings app'
from ON to OFF. (What content? Ads? VERY OBNOXIOUS)

In 'Privacy > Diagnostics & feedback':
Can only change 'Full' to 'Basic' - not off-completely.
    (VERY OBNOXIOUS and UNWANTED PROCESSING.)

    Changed 'Feedback frequency'
    FROM 'Automatically' TO 'Never'.
    (Feedback to whom? Microsoft?)
    (MORE UNWANTED PROCESSING.)

    In 'Privacy > Activity History':
Unchecked 'Let Windows collect my activities from this PC.'
    (EXTREMELY INTRUSIVE and UNWANTED-UNNEEDED PROCESSING.
Does Microsoft really allow users to turn this off?)

'Let Windows sync my activities from this PC to the cloud'
was already unchecked --- BUT ONE SHOULD CHECK OCCASIONALLY (esp. after Windows updates) THAT THESE ARE UNCHECKED.
(What does Microsoft mean by 'the cloud'?????????)

    In 'Privacy > Location':
CHECK OCCASIONALLY TO MAKE SURE LOCATION OPTIONS FOR THIS DESKTOP PC ARE OFF.
(This PC is not going anywhere, and I can provide that information if/when I need to. This is more processing that is eliminated.)

    In 'Privacy > Camera':
Changed 'Allow apps to access your camera'
    from ON to OFF.
(PRETTY DISGUSTING THAT MICROSOFT DEFAULTS THIS TO 'ON'.)

    In 'Privacy > Microphone':
Changed 'Allow apps to access your microphone'
    from ON to OFF.
(PRETTY DISGUSTING THAT MICROSOFT DEFAULTS THIS TO 'ON'.)

    In 'Privacy > Notifications':
Changed 'Let apps access my notifications'
    from ON to OFF.

    In 'Privacy > Account info':
Changed 'Let apps access your account info'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? BLANKET PERMISSIONS?)

    In 'Privacy > Contacts':
Changed 'Allow apps to access your contacts'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? BLANKET PERMISSIONS?)

    In 'Privacy > Calendar':
Changed 'Allow apps to access your calendar'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? BLANKET PERMISSIONS?)

    In 'Privacy > Call History':
Changed 'Allow apps to access your call history'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? BLANKET PERMISSIONS?)

    In 'Privacy > Email':
Changed 'Allow apps to access your email'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? BLANKET PERMISSIONS?)

    In 'Privacy > Tasks':
Changed 'Allow apps to access your tasks'
    from ON to OFF.
(NOTE: Microsoft says Mail and Calendar 'always have access to your tasks'.)

    In 'Privacy > Messaging':
Changed 'Allow access to messaging on this device'
    from ON to OFF.
Changed 'Allow apps to read or send messages'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? BLANKET PERMISSIONS?)

    In 'Privacy > Radios':
    Changed 'Let apps control radios'
    from ON to OFF.

    In 'Privacy > Other Devices':
Changed "Let your apps automatically share and sync info with wireless devices that don't explicitly pair with your PC, table or phone (Example: beacons)"
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? BLANKET PERMISSIONS?)

    In 'Privacy > Background apps':
Changed 'Let apps run in the background'
    from ON to OFF.
(NOTE: May have to return here to selectively allow some apps.)

    In 'Privacy > App diagnostics':
Changed 'Let apps access diagnostic infromation'
    from ON to OFF.

In 'Privacy > Automatic file downloads':
CHECK THIS OCCASIONALLY TO MAKE SURE NO APPS INAPPROPRIATELY HAVE PERMISSION TO DO AUTO-DOWNLOADS.
(THIS COULD BE A MAJOR SECURITY RISK.)

    In 'Privacy > Documents':
Changed 'Allow access to document libraries on this device'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? DEFAULTING TO ON?)

Changed 'Allow apps to access your documents library'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? DEFAULTING TO ON?)

    In 'Privacy > Pictures':
Changed 'Allow access to picture libraries on this device'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? DEFAULTING TO ON?)

Changed 'Allow apps to access your pictures library'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? DEFAULTING TO ON?)

(NOTE: Microsoft says 'Photos' and 'Camera' "always have access to your pictures library".)

    In 'Privacy > Videos':
Changed 'Allow access to video libraries on this device'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? DEFAULTING TO ON?)

Changed 'Allow apps to access your videos library'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? DEFAULTING TO ON?)

(NOTE: Microsoft says 'Photos' "always have access to your videos library".)

    In 'Privacy > File system':
Changed 'Allow access to the file system on this device'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? DEFAULTING TO ON?)

Changed 'Allow apps to access your file system'
    from ON to OFF.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME? DEFAULTING TO ON?)

THIS 'File system' OPTION IS A MAJOR SECURITY RISK --- AS ARE MOST OF THESE 'Privacy' OPTIONS.

YOU CAN BET MICROSOFT CAN ACCESS WHATEVER-WHENEVER THEY WANT

--- AND THEY MAY ACCIDENTALLY ALLOW ACCESS VIA THEIR PROGRAMMING ERRORS/OVERSIGHTS, AS WELL AS BY THESE DEFAULTS SET TO 'ON'.

THESE KINDS OF SECURITY & IDENTITY-THEFT RISKS ARE WHY I PREFER TO USE ALMOST ANY OTHER OPERATING SYSTEM THAN 'MICROSOFT WINDOWS'.
BUT NOT 'GOOGLE CHROME'. IT IS AS INTRUSIVE AND OBNOXIOUS AS 'MICROSOFT WINDOWS'.

UPDATE-and-SECURITY settings:

In 'Update & Security > Windows Update':
In the 'Change Active Hours' section, the 'typical use' hours were set to
    Start: 8:00 AM
    End: 5:00 PM

    Changed to
    Start: 6:00 AM
    End: 11:00 PM
to allow for updates at 'off-hours' (in this time zone).

In 'Update & Security > Windows Security':
You can access/open 'Windows Defender Security Center' and see reports/status of 'Protection areas' including
    - Virus & Threat protection
    - Account protection
    - Firewall & network protection
    - App and browser control
    - Device security
    - Device performance & health
    - Family options

In 'Update & Security > Backup':
You can add a drive for backup --- and via 'More options', you can access
'Restore files from a current backup'.

Other 'Update & Security' sections (subgroups) are:

    • Troubleshoot

    • Recovery

    • Activation   (Did not need to do this. HP handled it?)

    • Find my device   (Probably not needed for this desktop PC.)

    • For developers
(May need to activate 'Developer mode' to install some apps?)

    • Windows Insider Program

END of 2020-March Settings Notes.

Another pass over the Windows 10 'Settings' was done in June 2021 (a little over a year later). The notes on those settings follow.

SYSTEM settings:

    In 'System > Multi-Tasking':
Turned OFF 'Arrange windows automatically by dragging them to the sides or corners of the screen'.

In 'System > Projecting to this PC':
Turned OFF "This PC can be discovered for projection-only when it's plugged into a power source".

    In 'System > Shared Experiences':
Turned OFF 'Let apps on other devices (including linked phones and tablets) open and message apps on this device, and vice versa'.
(THIS SEEMS LIKE A MAJOR SECURITY RISK.)

DEVICES settings:

In 'Devices > Printers & Scanners':
Unchecked 'Let Windows manage my default printer'.
(WHAT DOES MICROSOFT MEAN BY THIS?)

    In 'Devices > Typing':
    Turned OFF 'Autocorrect misspelled words'.
    (Left 'Write misspelled' ON.)
Turned OFF 'Add a period after I double-tap the space bar'.

    In 'Devices > AutoPlay':
Turned OFF 'Use AutoPlay for all media and devices'.

PHONE settings:

Had no 2021-June notes on 'Phone' settings.

NETWORK-and-INTERNET settings:

Had no 2021-June notes on 'Network & Internet' settings.

PERSONALIZATION settings:

    In 'Personalization > Start':
Turned OFF 'Show recently added apps'.
Turned OFF 'Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start of the taskbar'.

    In 'Personalization > Taskbar':
    Changed 'Combine taskbar buttons'
    FROM
    'Always, hide labels'
    TO
    'When taskbar is full'.

APPS settings:

    In 'Apps > Default Apps',
    set 'Email' to 'Thunderbird'
set 'Music' to 'Windows Media Player'
    set 'Photo Viewer' to 'Paint'
set 'Video Player' to 'Windows Media Player'
    set 'Web browser' to 'SeaMonkey'.

    In 'Apps > Startup':
    Turned OFF 'HP Message Service',
    'Microsoft OneDrive',
    and 'BT Server'.

ACCOUNTS settings:

    In 'Accounts > Sign-in Options':
The 'security questions' are horribly inflexible and useless to all but rich suburbanites. Inner-city people will find it tough to find a useable question.

I may want to turn OFF 'Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device and reopen my apps after an update or restart'.

TIME-and-LANGUAGE settings:

Had no 2021-June notes on 'Time & Language' settings.

GAMING settings:

Had no 2021-June notes on 'Gaming' settings.

EASE-of-ACCESS settings:

In 'Ease of Access > Display':
Turn OFF 'Show transparency in windows'.
Turn OFF 'Automatically hide scroll bars in windows'.
    Change 'Show notifications for'
FROM '5 secs' TO '15 secs'.

In 'Ease of Access > Cursor & pointer size':
As noted in 2020-March notes above, best to leave the cursor thickness very thin, otherwise it hides a letter in very small fonts in entry fields.

In 'Ease of Access > Narrator':
Unchecked 'Allow shortcut keys to start Narrator'.

CORTANA settings:

In 'Cortana > Talk to Cortana':
Turned OFF 'Use Cortana even when my device is locked'.

In 'Cortana > Permissions & History':
    Turned OFF 'Windows Cloud Search'.
Turned OFF 'My device history' (used in on-device searches).

In 'Cortana > Cortana across my devices':
Turned OFF 'Help me pick up where I left off on other devices.'

PRIVACY settings:

    In 'Privacy > General':
Turned OFF 'Let websites provide locally relevant content by accessing my language list'.
Turned OFF 'Let Windows track app launches to improve Start and Search results'.
Turned OFF 'Show me suggested content in the Settings app'.

In 'Privacy > Diagnostics & Feedback':
Set 'Basic' rather than 'Full' for data sent to Microsoft. Cannot choose 'None'. 'Full' is very intrusive, and could be a processing hog.

    Turned ON 'Diagnostic Data Viewer'.
(Should this be OFF?? How to use this?)

    Changed 'Feedback Frequency'
    FROM
    'Automatically'
    TO
    'Never'.
(Microsoft gets enough from intrusively searching through these devices whenever they do 'updates'.)

    In 'Privacy > Activity History':
Turned OFF 'Let Windows collect my activities from this PC.'.
(That could be a local-processing and network hog.)

    In 'Privacy > Camera':
Turned OFF 'Allow apps to access your camera'.

    In 'Privacy > Microphone':
Turned OFF 'Allow apps to access your microphone'.

    In 'Privacy > Notifications':
Turned OFF 'Let apps access my notifications'.

    In 'Privacy > Account Info':
Turned OFF 'Allow apps to access your account info'.

    In 'Privacy > Contacts':
Turned OFF 'Allow apps to access your contacts'.

    In 'Privacy > Calendar':
Turned OFF 'Allow apps to access your calendar'.

    In 'Privacy > Call History':
Turned OFF 'Allow apps to access your call history'.

    In 'Privacy > Email':
Turned OFF 'Allow apps to access your email'.

    In 'Privacy > Tasks':
Turned OFF 'Allow apps to access your tasks'.

    In 'Privacy > Messaging':
Turn OFF 'Allow access to messaging on this device'.
Turn OFF 'Allow apps to read or send messages'.
    (Access was already OFF.)

    In 'Privacy > Radios':
Turned OFF 'Let apps control radios'.

    In 'Privacy > Other devices':
Turned OFF "Let your apps automatically share and sync info with wireless devices that don't explicitly pair with your PC, tablet, or phone".

    In 'Privacy > Background apps':
Turned OFF 'Let apps run in the background'.

    In 'Privacy > App diagnostics':
Turned OFF 'Let apps access diagnostic information'.

    In 'Privacy > Documents':
Turn OFF 'Allow apps to access your documents library'.

    In 'Privacy > Pictures':
Turn OFF 'Allow apps to access your pictures library'.

    In 'Privacy > Videos':
Turn OFF 'Allow apps to access your videos library'.

    In 'Privacy > File system':
Turn OFF 'Allow apps to access your file system'.

CONCLUSION:

The 'Settings Notes' here may be used to help me determine if my Windows 10 settings have been changed by Microsoft Windows 10 system updates.

These 'Settings Notes' may also be used to help me in determining appropriate Windows 10 settings on other Windows 10 computers --- and even Windows 11 computers.

One could bring this web page up in a web browser on any Windows 10 (or Windows 11) computer, and check the 'Settings' on that computer by comparing to the notes on this page.

Hence, this web page is provided on the internet --- to help me, and perhaps others.
