INTRODUCTION : In the 2020-to-2021 time frame, I was migrating data files from an old Dell Windows 7 desktop computer to a newer HP Windows 10 desktop computer. Besides the appeal of upgrading to a computer with more up-to-date hardware components, I was mainly motivated (and forced) to migrate to Windows 10 (Wikipedia link) because Microsoft was stopping support of Windows 7 (Wikipedia link) in January 2020.
Another strong motivator: So, around the year 2020, I finally started migrating from that old Windows 7 computer to a Windows 10 computer. The computer specs of the Dell-Win7 and HP-Win10 desktop computers are presented on a separate computer-specs web page. This computer-to-computer migration was a rather slow migration consisting of several steps:
This page is meant to describe 'Account Settings' (for a particular user's mail account) in Thunderbird 8.0. Thunderbird 8.0 (released Nov 8, 2011) was used on the old Dell-Win7 computer from 2011 to mid-2021. This page is meant to show the Thunderbird 8.0 'Account Settings' as they existed (for a user 'marlo') on June 27, 2021. The links above this introduction are meant to take me/you to descriptions of the items in dozen groups of Account Settings in Thunderbird 8.0. The links above are to sections below, on this page. To get to the 'Account Settings' window in Thunderbird 8.0, you can use the toolbar path Tools > Account Settings' There are twelve (12) panel-names shown in a list on the left of the 'Account Settings' window --- divided into several sections:
The 12 sections below show important settings in each panel. Instead of using screen-captures of the many panels (and some sub-panels), in the sections below, I have used the following conventions: Titles and labels on the panels are denoted by single-quotes around the text strings. This means that the labels for the checkbuttons and radiobuttons and entry-fields are enclosed in single-quotes. Text strings that I have added as comments are generally enclosed in parentheses or brackets. Entries in 'entry fields' are generally shown after a colon (:) at the end of the label-string for the entry field. This means that the contents of an entry field follow a colon (:) that indicates the end of the name/label for the entry field. Settings may not be shown for 'entry fields' that were blank (or grayed out). A 'checkbutton' that is checked will be denoted by 'C-YES' before its label-string. A 'checkbutton' that is unchecked will be denoted by 'C-NOT' before its label-string. Settings may not be shown for 'checkbuttons' that were unchecked (or grayed out). A 'radiobutton' that is selected will be denoted by 'R-YES' before its label-string. A 'radiobutton' that is not-selected will be denoted by 'R-NOT' before its label-string. Settings may not be shown for 'radiobuttons' that are not not used (grayed out). A list selection will be denoted by 'LIST:' followed by the label-string of an item selected in the list. Selections may not be shown for 'lists' that are not not used (grayed out). Besides section-titles on the panels, a few of the items --- such as 'Server name' or 'Port' --- are shown in bold, because they are often a critical (and non-obvious) item that is needed to receive-or-send mail via the mail provider. These notes can serve to help me check the 'Account Settings' in the newer release of Thunderbird (version 68.6.0, released circa 2018) --- on the HP-Win10 desktop computer --- after the migration of the Thunderbird mail files.
NOTE: In addition to Thunderbird 'Account Settings', there is a set of Thunderbird 'Global Preferences' windows and panels. Some of those windows and panels are accessed by buttons on the 'Account Settings' panels. A fairly detailed description of Thunderbird 'Global Preferences' options is on a separate web page that shows example Thunderbird 'Global Preferences' for Thunderbird 60.9.0 that was installed on an Acer desktop computer running the Ubuntu-MATE 18.04 (2018 April) operating system. Enough of this introduction. A description of the Thunderbird 8.0 'Account Settings' follows. |

END of Tunderbird 8.0 'Account Settings' Notes. |
Below is a presentation of the mail folders (and some sub-folders) that were shown in Thunderbird 8.0 on the Dell-Win7 computer in June 2021 --- when the data migration was done to an HP-Win10 computer. msmith@mail-provider.com
There were some other miscellaneous folders and sub-folders under 'Local Folders'. These were mostly from an import (done in 2011 Nov 27) of mail from the Microsoft 'Outlook Express' mail client that was used on a computer that was used before the Dell-Win7 computer. After these mail files were migrated to the HP-Win10 computer running Thunderbird 68.6.0, these folders were cleaned up and reorganized. For example: Old mail in 'Inbox' was moved into 'Received_2011' ... 'Received_2017' folders that were created under 'Local_Folders'. Old mail in 'Sent' was moved into 'Sent_2011' ... 'Sent_2017' folders that were created under 'Local_Folders'. Old mail in 'Archive' subfolders was moved to the 'Sent_xxxx' or 'Received_xxxx' subfolders of 'Local Folders' --- or some of the old mail was deleted. The two 'Trash' folders were emptied --- and the 'Drafts' folder was emptied. The mystery 'nstmp' folder was also emptied and removed. |
FOR MORE INFORMATION: To find more information on Thunderbird and its settings, you can try WEB SEARCHES on keywords such as the following. You can also try Wikipedia pages like the following, and following links on those pages for even more information. |
CONCLUSION: These 'Thunderbird 8.0 Account Settings Notes' may be used to help me check on Thunderbird account-settings --- specifically for the Thunderbird 68.6.0 release installed in 2021 on the afore-mentioned HP-Windows10 desktop computer. These 'Thunderbird Account Settings Notes' may be used to help me if/when I have to migrate Thunderbird mail to a new release of Thunderbird --- for example, if I have to do another data migration from a Windows 10 computer to a Windows 11 computer. One could bring this web page up in a web browser on any Windows 10 (or Windows 11) computer, and check 'mail settings' on that computer by comparing to the notes on this page. Hence, this web page is provided on the internet --- to help me, and perhaps others. |
