INTRODUCTION :

In investing in stocks, I have found that the companies most likely to go bankrupt are companies that do not pay a dividend.

In my experience, these have often been tech companies --- such as computer companies and solar energy companies --- who never paid a dividend --- hoping that their investors would be attracted by growth possibilities (and, eventually, appreciation in the market value of their stock).

From those painful bankruptcies, I have found that it is much safer to invest the majority of a portfolio (like 90% --- ninety percent) in dividend-paying stocks.

At the same time, it is best to NOT be attracted to stocks paying dividends of over about 5 or 6 percent.

Those are often companies that have fallen on hard times --- that is, they were paying about 3 percent, but their stock market value dropped about 50 percent, so, suddenly, a 3 percent dividend turned into a 6 percent dividend.

Another example of stocks paying dividends around 6 percent or more were Greek (and other) ocean shipping companies --- and South African mining companies --- in the 2000 to 2010 period.

After around 2008, overbuilding in the shipping industry resulted in a drop in income and many of the ocean shipping companies stopped paying any dividend at all. And some South African mining companies also stopped paying any dividend --- some going completely bankrupt.

The Data

The main feature of this page is a SORTABLE data-table of companies paying a significant dividend (say, more than 2 percent) --- but a dividend that can probably be sustained --- so, generally, a dividend of less than 6 percent.

Some companies paying a dividend of less than 2 percent are included (example: Apple). These low-dividend companies are mostly companies that have shown profitablity and stock-price appreciation over a period of more than a few years.

Content of the data-table :

The company-name is in the 1st column of the table.

Initially, the sortable-table is in alphanumeric order by company-name.

The company-stock-symbol is shown in the 2nd column.

The 3rd and 4th columns contain a year and the APPROXIMATE dividend-percent being paid in that year.

The dividend-percents are generally reported to only one decimal place. This rough figure is used (usually rounded DOWN to the nearest tenth of a percent, to be conservative) because the dividend-percent is actually very volatile because it is the annual-dividend-per-share DIVIDED BY THE STOCK PRICE-PER-SHARE, and the share-price can vary from hour-to-hour and even second-to-second.

The intent is to simply provide an idea of the relative magnitude of the dividend-rate paid by each company --- NOT an exact and up-to-date figure.

You can click on the dividend-percent-link to see a more current dividend-percent --- and a historical chart --- and even check if the company is still paying a dividend.

If that link fails to show the current dividend, click on the stock-symbol-link to see financial statistics that will include dividend data.

The 5th column contains a Payout-percent (typically called 'Payout Ratio') being paid in that year.

The Payout-percent (Investopedia link) can be calculated as

    Annual Dividend per Share
    divided by
    Annual Net-Income per Share

If the Payout-percent is greater than 100, the dividend MAY be unsustainable, because it may be that the company's net-income has dropped and they may have to lower the dividend.

On the other hand, if the Payout-percent is very low (say less than 15 percent), the dividend may not have changed --- the net-income of the company may have increased substantially. If that increase can be sustained, this may be a good thing in the long run. For example, the company may be able to raise the dividend in the near future.

In some cases, the Payout-percent is shown as 'TBD' (To Be Determined). This is usually an indication that the company's net income has gone NEGATIVE in a recent quarter. In that case, although the company may still be paying a dividend, it is rather meaningless to report a negative Payout-percent.

In the sortable-table below, if you sort on Payout-percent, the 'TBD' entries sort to the top or bottom of the table, in a descending or ascending sort, respectively.

You can check out the Investopedia link above for more information about what can affect the payout-percent and what the payout-percent may indicate.

OR, you can do a WEB SEARCH on keywords such as 'payout ratio meaning'.

To see a 'current' payout-percent for a company, you can click on the stock-symbol-link to see financial statistics that will include dividend data such as dividend-percent and payout-percent.

The dividend-percent is a link to a 'macrotrends.net' page that shows a bar-chart of the dividends paid by the company in previous years as well as the most recently-reported year.

This dividend-chart-link provides a way to see the company dividends even though the data in this table becomes out-of-date.

The company-name is a link to a company info page --- usually a Wikipedia page, if one is available for the company.

Otherwise, the link is a WEB SEARCH on keywords, including the company name.

The stock-symbol is a link to a 'key-statistics' page at 'finance.yahoo.com'.

That link provides some financial information on the stock --- such as current dividend rate and recent trading-price-range of the stock --- as well as recent price-to-earnings ratios and profit-margin and revenue and long-term-debt and debt-to-equity ratio and other information on which to base buying (and selling) decisions.

A Stock Price Histories page of this site provides links to many more financial-info sites by which you can get more info --- or get corroborating info --- for these dividend-paying companies.

The 'Nature' of these companies:

I have been 'burned' several times by companies that eventually went bankrupt. As I mentioned above, almost without exception, those companies were companies that did not pay a dividend.

In almost no cases have I experienced a company going bankrupt when the company has been paying a dividend for many years and continues to do so.

So the following companies are, for the most part, companies that are likely to preserve an investment --- which should be especially appealing to retirees who are trying to preserve their savings during their retirement years --- yet try to get some appreciation in their savings to counteract the effects of inflation.

This table of more than 250 companies provide data by which to build a quite diversified --- and relatively safe --- portfolio. But check financial statistics such as profit-margin and debt-ratios, as indicated above.

Some of these companies are foreign (non-U.S.) companies whose stock is available in the United States via an ADR (American Depositary Receipt). The string '(ADR)' below denotes some of those companies.

More companies (that could be expected to sustain a dividend of around 1 to 3 percent) could be added to this table. Some may be added in future months.

Some more information on these companies may be available at their web sites --- and their 10-K reports may be available at the SEC web site at sec.gov, where SEC = Securities and Exchange Commission. However, it may not be easy to find annual reports and proxy statements for a given company on their site.

The site docoh.com provides SEC filings (such as 10-K annual reports and proxy statements, which include executive compensation data) in convenient lists of links to relevant documents.

(You can use the 'Search' field at the top of the 'docoh.com' home page. Enter a stock symbol or company name. The '10-K' annual reports and 'DEF 14A' annual proxy statements are readily available.)

A Stock Price Histories page of this site provides links to many more financial-info sites by which you can get more info --- or get corroborating info --- for these dividend-paying companies.

    Warning:
If you go to sell a stock and its price has dropped significantly from your purchase price, the dividends you collected could be effectively wiped out.

You can use this 'Stock Price Histories' page to see charts of the historical stock prices of these companies. Using those charts, you could make a determination of whether you want to risk an investment in the company.

In other words, you could use the price charts to take a guess at how likely a company's stock price is to fall and wipe out your dividend gains when you go to sell it.

ALTERNATIVELY ...

You can do various web searches on various companies to get further information on their dividends and dividend-paying history. For example, using 'Alliant Energy' as a sample company, here are some example queries.

Additionally, you can get further information on many companies at Wikipedia --- for example, Alliant Energy (Wikipedia link).

More dividend-payers:

You can use 'stock screeners' to find dividend-paying companies whose dividends are currently more than, say, 2 percent.

For example, you can try the stock-screener at macrotrends.net.

For an alternative, you can try the stock-screener at finviz.com.
