INTRODUCTION : Scroll down this page to see brief descriptions of instances of some lethal (or potentially lethal) crimes committed in 2018 on 'the Peninsula' --- the peninsula between the James and York rivers in southern Virginia --- a metropolitan area including the cities of Hampton and Newport News --- part of the 'Hampton Roads' area of Virginia. Most of these crime instances were recorded from a 'Local News - Briefs' section of the Daily Press newspaper. The eventual purpose of this page is to provide a map of the Peninsula area that includes markers to show the locations of violent crimes (or potentially violent crimes) --- for a period of about a year --- in 2018. For now, each crime is shown on a map with a single marker for that crime. Eventually, the plan is to provide a large map showing markers (plural) for all the listed crimes for the year. The emphasis is on shootings that may or may not have resulted in a death. However, other crimes --- such as armed robberies, burglaries, car jackings, rapes, purse snatching, etc. --- may also be recorded --- because, if things go 'haywire', someone may be killed or seriously maimed. Officers and medics responded to a report of a stabbing in the 1200 block of Easterly Avenue about 9:15AM Jan 18. They found a 39-year-old Hampton man suffering from stab wounds. He was taken to the hospital. Investigators think the man was inside a residence when the woman stabbed him. She fled the area before police arrived. Investigators identified Anastasia Artis, 28, of Hampton, in connection with the incident. Police found her in the first block of West Mercury Boulevard a short time later. Jackson, 46 REPORTED IN: Daily Press, 2018 Jan 25, Thursday NOTES: A DJ at a local night club was accused of shooting another man at the business, Saturday. Police and medics responded to the Charm'd Lounge, at 25 Wythe Creek Road, shortly before 1AM. They found a 32-year-old Newport News man with a single gunshot would. He was taken to the hospital. Investigators think the victim was in an argument inside the club with the DJ, identified as Samuel C. Jackson, 46, of Newport News. They think at some point Jackson went outside to the parking lot, got a gun, and then went back inside the club and shot the victim. Jackson, of the 100 block of Gretna Way in Newport News, was wanted for one count each maiming, brandishing a firearm and discharging a firearm in a public place. Officers responded to a report of a robbery at the convenience store, at 2610 Cunningham Drive, about 3:20AM. The robber walked into the business, pulled out a gun, and demanded money. He received an undisclosed amount of cash and cigars and then fled the area in a silver sedan. The suspect is described as a black male. The man told officers he was walking in the 1100 block of 33rd Street when he heard gunshots and was hit. The man the walked to a nearby convenience store for help. The man was taken to a hospital. Two men, ages 24 and 32, were hurt in that shooting. Investigators said the two men were walking from a nearby store when a silver or light-colored SUV approached them.
