DESKTOP Computer Bargains
(sub-$400) |
INTRODUCTION: This is a page of 'desktop' computers that were for sale (NEW, unused, not-refurbished) for about $400 or less --- mostly in 'brick-and-mortar' stores. These are 'desktop' computers (Wikipedia link) that were marketed without a monitor --- but typically with a keyboard and a mouse in the packaging. I have found that one can usually find lower prices for 'desktops' at 'brick-and-mortar' stores than on the internet. This is probably because one can take advantage of 'clearance' and 'inventory reduction' sales --- and 'promotional offers'. These 'desktop' computers do NOT have 'high-end' processors in them that are meant for playing (or developing) fast-action detailed-3D computer games --- or transcoding movie-length video files. These are 'desktop' computers that are quite sufficient for
THE FOLLOWING DATA: Within each 'year-group' below, the information for each 'desktop' computer may include:
The desktop computer 'makes' may be shown in the order --- Acer, HP, Dell, other. INFO SOURCES NOTE: Up to about 2019, I was able to collect desktop computer model and price information by looking at Sunday newspaper ads in a local newspaper. BUT ... Starting about 2019, 'brick-and-mortar' stores (like Target, Walmart, OfficeDepot/Max, BestBuy) advertised computers-for-sale far less than before (in local newspapers). So I tried to use web searches to find desktop computer bargains, using keywords such as BUT, I kept finding pages that said that the computer make-and-model on the page was
In short, I found that looking for computer bargains on the web was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Very frustrating and time-wasting. By the way, I found that computer-info web pages of Walmart, Target, OfficeDepot/Max, BestBuy, and Costco came up MUCH, MUCH more slowly than the computer-info web pages of Amazon. Even the pages of computer makers like Acer and HP and Dell come up rather slowly. So it was another frustrating and time-wasting experience to wait for a Walmart/Target/OfficeDepot/BestBuy/Costco web page to be rendered. Apparently the Amazon web page developers are MUCH, MUCH better than the web page developers for Walmart/Target/OfficeDepot/BestBuy/Costco. Having said that, if I 'stumble on-line' across a desktop that meets the parameters of this page, I may add such a desktop to this page (typically from Amazon because it is a less-frustrating web site to deal with). A new way of finding desktop bargains: To find bargains (in 'desktops' and 'laptops' and 'netbooks'), I found that I had to periodically roam the aisles of stores like Walmart, OfficeDepot/Max, and BestBuy to look for clearance sales --- with Walmart offering the best hopes of a bargain in 2021. Target stopped offering 'desktop' computers around 2018, and after about 2019, they offered mostly 'chromebooks' --- with hardly any 'laptop' offerings. So looking for desktop computers in Target stores has become wasted effort. And I have seldom found desktop-computer bargains at Costco, because most of the desktop computers offered by Costco are above $500 in price.
Bottom line: AGE & FEATURES NOTE: If you are looking for a 'desktop' to do basic processing (email, web browsing, document editing, image editing, etc.), I have found that a computer manufactured about 6 years ago can work just fine --- if it has the features you want --- such as your desired storage drive size, memory size, wired ethernet port, WiFi card, at least 7 USB ports, HDMI video port(s), etc. I say this coming from the point of view that I would 'wipe' the Microsoft Windows operating system off of the old computer --- and replace the OS with a Linux OS like Ubuntu MATE (Wikipedia page) --- and install recently released versions of 'apps' like web browsers, text editors, image editors, media players & editors, an email processor, office apps, etc. So for example, in 2021, a 'desktop' manufactured in 2015 may suit your purposes just fine --- for several more years. The following Single-Thread 'Passmark' CPU ratings come from the SingleThread page at 'cpubenchmark.net'. I generally look for CPU's with single-thread 'Passmark' ratings higher than 500 --- which is about twice the single-thread rating of Intel Atom processors used in 'netbook' computers circa 2010. The 'Passmark' ratings for each processor may vary somewhat over time as more performance data is collected --- but the ratings below (for processors in desktop-computers listed on this page) should be very close to the current desktop-processor ratings available via the 'www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html' web page. Most of the following 'desktop' computers include features such as:
To confirm the features on any make-model below, you can use the WEB SEARCH links for each make-model listed below to find details on product specifications. Note that you can scan through the years below to see how features on desktop-computers have changed through the years --- features like:
And you can use a 'find text-string in page' option of your web browser to find desktop-computers with certain types of features. For example, search for the text string 'processor' to quickly go to the processor make-model of each desktop-computer. And you could search for the 2-character text string 'i3' to find desktops that have an Intel 'i3' CPU processor chip --- or use 'celeron' to find desktops that have an Intel Celeron chip --- or use 'ryzen' to find desktops that use an AMD Ryzen chip. End of Introduction. The list of low-cost desktop-computers starts just below, grouped by year that they were available at the listed price.
