USB 'stick' Bargains

INTRODUCTION: This is a page of 'USB stick' prices that were advertised in 'sales' --- mostly by 'brick-and-mortar' stores. These are 'sticks' that were being sold for far less than one dollar per Gigabyte --- after about 2013. For example, a 64 Gigabyte 'stick' selling for $20 would be about 31 cents per Gigabyte. I have found that one can usually find as good prices for USB 'sticks' (alias 'thumb drives', alias 'pen drives', alias 'flash drives') at 'brick-and-mortar' stores as on the internet. This is probably because one can take advantage of 'clearance' and 'inventory reduction' sales --- and 'promotional offers'. Most of the following price data, in the 2010-2020 time frame, came from newspaper ads. The price of these solid-state-storage 'sticks' has gone down relatively fast in the past decade (about 2010-2020) --- from about $2 per Gigabyte to less than 20 cents per Gigabyte. The PRICE-per-Gigabyte of 'solid-state' storage is rapidly appoaching the PRICE-per-Gigabyte of 'rotating-disk' storage.

The USB-stick 'makes' may be shown in the order --- Lexar, PNY, Memorex, Kingston, and other --- larger sizes first. (I do not show SanDisk products. I had a bad experience with SanDisk putting space-hogging software on their USB sticks --- in a hard-to-remove (CD partition) way. Others were also turned off by SanDisk.)
WARNING: For loading and storing a huge amount of files (or very large files), you will probably find that using 'external USB storage drives', rather than 'sticks', is a more reliable way to go. 'External USB storage devices' seem to have more sophisticated controller firmware (or better support in operating system kernels). Also, note that stores often sell USB 'sticks' at inflated prices --- as mentioned on the USB Stick Bargains INTRO page. You can save quite a few dollars by looking/comparing before you buy. |
