NETBOOK Computer Bargains
(less than 15 inch screen)
grouped by year(sub-$300) |
INTRODUCTION: This is a page of 'netbook' computers (NEW, unused, not-refurbished) that were for sale for about $300 or less --- mostly at 'brick-and-mortar' stores. Although 'netbook' (Wikipedia link) computers are no longer marketed with that 'designation', there are still 'subnotebook' (Wikipedia link) computers being manufactured in 2020 and beyond. This page deals with those 'mini laptop' computers. I have found that one can usually find lower prices for 'netbooks' at 'brick-and-mortar' stores than on the internet. This is probably because one can take advantage of 'clearance' and 'inventory reduction' sales --- and 'promotional offers'. In the 2009-2018 time frame, 'netbook' computers were mostly distinguished by having
The original 'netbook' computers also came equipped with an RJ-45 port for WIRED ethernet connection. 'Netbook' computers originally came out with 10.1" screens --- and 'migrated' to 11.6" screens. 'Laptop' computers with 14" screens are sometimes referred to as 'notebook' computers. We will consider laptop computers with 14" screens to be 'netbook' computers. A few 'laptop' computers with 13.3" screens 'came out' around 2018. Since about 2019, many 'laptop' computers no longer have a CD/DVD drive, but they typically have a storage drive of more than 120 Gigabytes. These pages distinguish 'netbook' computers from 'laptops' by the feature of having a screen-size of less than 15 inches (diagonally). (A further feature that has distinguished a 'netbook' from a 'laptop' has been a weight of about 3 pounds or less --- about 1.4 kilograms --- mainly due to the smaller screen size.) Since about 2019, 'chromebooks' have been marketed heavily --- but they are different from 'netbooks' in the fact that they usually have only a 32 or 64 Gigabyte storage drive. The main feature that this page uses to distinguish a 'netbook' computer from a 'chromebook' is a storage drive of more than 120 GB --- in addition to having multiple USB ports --- and WIRED ethernet connectivity. These features also distinguish 'netbook' computers from 'pad/tablet' computers. I want the extra, built-in storage --- and the multiple USB ports (for example, to attach a mouse or USB stick or other USB device) --- and the WIRED ethernet connectivity option. Hence I prefer 'netbooks' to 'chromebooks' and 'pad/tablet' computers --- especially for 'development' work such as for creating/editing web pages (HTML-CSS-JavaScript code) and for programming (mainly shell & Tcl/Tk scripts).
NOTE: For more information on the features that are being used to classify a 'laptop' computer as a 'netbook' computer, see the 'Netbook Bargains INTRO' page of this site. Also see the 'Netbook Love' (Testimonials) page of this site. THE FOLLOWING DATA: Within each year-group below, the information for each 'netbook' computer may include:
The netbook 'makes' may be shown in the order --- Acer, HP, Dell, Asus, Lenovo, other --- within each year-section. INFO SOURCES NOTE: Up to about 2019, I was able to collect computer model and price information by looking at Sunday newspaper ads in a local newspaper. BUT ... Starting about 2019, 'brick-and-mortar' stores (like Target, Walmart, OfficeDepot/Max, BestBuy) advertised computers-for-sale far less than before (in local newspapers). So I tried to use web searches to find 'mini-laptop' computer bargains, using keywords such as
BUT, I kept finding pages that said that the computer make-and-model on the page was
In short, I found that looking for computer bargains on the web was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Very frustrating and time-wasting. By the way, I found that computer-info web pages of Walmart, Target, OfficeDepot/Max, and BestBuy came up MUCH, MUCH more slowly than the computer-info web pages of Amazon. (Even the web pages of computer manufacturers such as Acer and HP and Dell come up rather slowly.) So it was another frustrating and time-wasting experience to wait for a Walmart/Target/OfficeDepot/BestBuy web page to be rendered. Apparently the Amazon web page developers are MUCH, MUCH better than the web page developers for Walmart/Target/OfficeDepot/BestBuy. Having said that, if I 'stumble on-line' across a mini-laptop that meets the parameters of this page, I may add such a mini-laptop to this page (typically from Amazon because it is a less-frustrating web site to deal with). A new way of finding 'mini-laptop' bargains: To find bargains (in 'netbooks'/'subnotebooks' and 'laptops' and 'desktops'), I found that I had to periodically roam the aisles of stores like Walmart, OfficeDepot/Max, and BestBuy to look for clearance sales --- with Walmart offering the best hopes of a bargain in 2021. Target stopped offering desktop computers around 2018, and after about 2019, they offered mostly 'chromebooks' --- with hardly any 'laptop' offerings. So looking in Target stores was usually 'a bust'. And I have seldom found bargains at Costco, because most of the computers offered by Costco are above $500 in price.
Bottom line: AGE & FEATURES NOTE: If you are looking for a 'mini-laptop' to do basic processing (email, web browsing, document editing, image editing, etc.), I have found that a computer manufactured about 6 years ago can work just fine --- if it has the features you want --- such as your desired screen-size, storage drive size, memory size, wired ethernet port, at least 3 USB ports, HDMI video port, etc. I say this coming from the point of view that I would 'wipe' the Microsoft Windows operating system off of the old computer --- and replace the OS with a Linux OS like Ubuntu MATE (Wikipedia page) --- and install recently released versions of 'apps' like web browsers, text editors, image editors, media players & editors, office apps, etc. So for example, in 2021, a 'mini-laptop' manufactured in 2015 may suit your purposes just fine --- for several more years. The following Single-Thread 'Passmark' CPU ratings come from the SingleThread page at 'cpubenchmark.net'. I generally look for CPU's with single-thread 'Passmark' ratings higher than 500 --- which is about twice the single-thread rating of Intel Atom processors used in 'netbook' computers circa 2010. These 'mini-laptops' are generally equipped with

2022 NETBOOKS:
NOTE: Those newspaper ads used to include the computer manufacturer's model numbers (like for Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP). Around mid-2021 even the info-cards near demo computers in stores (like Walmart) did not include model numbers. Often, for Walmart, only a few 'specs' were readily available --- specs like CPU type, Gigabytes of memory, Gigabytes of storage --- and, for laptops, screen size. As a result, some of the web-search links below may NOT include a computer model-number --- JUST a few 'specs'.
